DWM, 47, iso SF, 37-50 . . . oops, wrong web site. .. ;) .. I am a father of three, a mountain biker, and a private pilot. I've had an eclectic collection of jobs, from selling custom bars to managing a beauty salon. I love to travel, in 2003 taking my eldest daughter biking around Lake Constance. Last summer, it was Scotland and golf with my son! |

I stumbled many years ago upon the concept of night photography, but was only recently introduced to Michael Kenna's work, and through him discovered a community of night photographers. The Nocturnes is such a group in the SF Bay Area. Their Fall, 2000, workshop hooked me! Shooting in the Golden Gate NRA under the guidance of Tim Baskerville and Lance Keimig was a terrific learning experience. Each photograph here represents something unknowable to the human eye. "Unknowable" because the human eye operates in real time: whether we look into the night at an object for one second, one minute, or one hour, we do not see it any more clearly than we do at first glance. The camera, on the other hand, does. I compare the open lens and film to a light savings account: the lens takes in deposits of light, accumulating an image. This image will eventually show all of the colors, definition and contrast of a day shot with the ethereal tones of something other-worldly. This, my friends, is Night Photography. Enjoy my attempts at collecting the light of the night. |
